The Teatro Calderón is the most important theater in Valladolid . It is located a few steps from the Plaza Mayor , Valladolid Cathedral and La Antigua.
The theater, opened at the end of 1864 , opened its doors with the representation of El Alcalde de Zalamea , the work of Calderón de la Barca, a poet and playwright whose theater inherits his name.
At the end of the twentieth century the theater underwent a profound remodeling and was reopened to the public in spring 1999. Since the reopening until 2007 has been the headquarters of the Symphony Orchestra of Castilla y León .
The Teatro Calderón has capacity for more than 1,000 spectators , offers plays, dance and musicals every week, and is the venue of the Seminci , the International Film Festival of Valladolid.
