The statue of Mahé La Bourdonnais is written entirely in the inventory of historical monuments, including its pedestal, foot plate and the grid on 14 August 2000.
August 15, 1856, inauguration by Governor Louis Henri Hubert Delisle of the statue of Bertrand François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, governor of the islands of France (Mauritius) and Bourbon (Réunion) for 1735-1747.
November 6, 1846, Governor Joseph Graeb asks the Minister of Colonies permission to open a public collection to raise a monument in honor of Mahé de La Bourdonnais.Two years later, Graeb sculptors projects the analysis Louis Daumas and Fraixe.The events of 1848 in France and Reunion, leading to suspend the search for funds for its implementation.
The public subscription was taken between 1850 and 1853.Three new projects are presented.Those Desboeufs Raggi and sculptors are discarded, it is the project of Louis Rochet, formed by sculptor David d'Angers is chosen.His sketch shows Mahé de La Bourdonnais holding in his hand the way that institutes governor of Isles of France and Bourbon, and pointing with the other hand the products of the soil that he imported to the islands.The order is confirmed April 15, 1853, letter from Vice-Admiral Cecille, chairman of the committee Mahé de La Bourdonnais.The statue of a height of three meters, was completed in 1854.
The bronze monument by the Parisian sculptor Louis Rochet is presented and medalist at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1855.He was taken to the Meeting by the Nantes party boat Alphonsine March 15, 1856.Mahé de La Bourdonnais is represented by foot, oceanfront, four bronze plaques, flank the high pedestal of basalt stone.
On the pedestal is a plaque on the front and three relief on each side that are adorned with attributes:
- Bas-relief at the rear, a three masts.( The sea ).
- Bas-relief on the left, coconut banana shack, shovel, barrels, bales.(Agriculture ).
- Bas-relief on the right, flags, spears, pitchforks, axes, picks, cannon, fetlock, marien anchor.(Military).
