The collection of the museum founder Adolf Fischer (1857-1914) and his wife Frieda née Bartdorff (1874-1945) are the main stock of the collections. Her collection of Buddhist painting and sculpture, Japanese screen painting, color wood cutting, Korean ceramics and lacquer art is considered to be one of the most important in Europe. Another focus of the museum's collections is the Chinese sacred bronzes and early ceramics, which were added after the Second World War, as well as the collection of East Asian calligraphy.
