Rua da Galeria, Braga, 4700, Portugal
Galeria Mário Sequeira was founded in 1994 in Braga, North of Portugal, at the ground floor of a farmhouse from the late XIX Century. The gallery comprises three exhibiting areas: the historical building, the 900 square-meter contemporary building, and a sculpture park within the bounds of an expansive green area.
The main exhibition building was designed by Carvalho Araújo and opened to the public in June 2000.Throughout its history, the gallery held the first solo presentation of Andy Warhol in Portugal, solo shows of Richard Long, Franz West and Nan Goldin, besides some major group exhibitions including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Georg Baselitz, Noble and Webster, and Gilbert and George.A close relationship with Richard Long also led to various interventions in the gallery with significant site-specific works still on display. The gallery has commissioned several large-scale projects for the sculpture park and presented works by Anselm Kiefer, Tony Cragg, Rachel Witheread, Anish Kapoor and Pedro Cabrita Reis alongside. The programme is focused in showcasing and supporting the work of national and international artists, a strong encouragement of developing curatorial practice, an artist-in-residence programme, and educational projects.
