Yokohama Triennale 2017

3 Chome-4-1 Minatomirai, Yokohama, Japan
Date :
From 4th August to 5th November 2017.

A veteran among Japan's art festivals, the Yokohama Triennale returns for its sixth run and will again centre on the Yokohama Museum of Art and its immediate surrounds. Akiko Miki, the artistic director of the Benesse Art Site on Naoshima, will be joining the Yokohama Museum's head honchos on the festival's directorial board. With a high-flying theme ('Islands, Constellations and Galapagos') set to unite the multitude of art on offer, things are certainly looking exciting for the 2017 edition of 'Yoko-Tori'.

Although this year sees the number of participating artists scaled back further – around 40 individuals and groups are set to take part, while 2014 saw 65 – there's nothing to complain about in terms of impact. Big names include the ever-critical Ai Weiwei and Maurizio Cattelan, known for his satirical artwork as well as for co-founding Toiletpaper magazine, while internationalista Rirkrit Tiravanija will be participating in a group installation. Other artists, such as Tsuyoshi Ozawa, will be highlighting the physical location of the triennale by creating artworks based on historical figures from Yokohama and surrounds, with fact and fiction overlapping.
