André Marfaing, born in Toulouse on December 11, 1925 and died in Paris on March 30, 1987, is a French painter and engraver, not figurative. He is associated with abstract art and considered a representative of informal painting. He worked oil, acrylic and engraving, using mostly black, in an abstract, ascetic painting, sometimes close to the ideogram. He began studying law in his hometown and obtained his license. Then he moved to Paris from 1949 and devoted himself exclusively to painting. In the 1950s, he moved from figuration to abstraction, with decisive encounters with artists such as Pierre Soulages, Francisco Bores, Roger Bissiere, Maurice Esteve, Alfred Manessier and Gerard Schneider. His first abstract painting dates back to 1953.
