Christian-typed symbols, Buddhist thought and the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer flow together in Wagner's highly rated drama. Bayreuth's master labeled his work as a 'Bühnenweihfestspiel', a festival drama with a religious aura, in which art takes over the function of a religious revelation. With her production of 'Parsifal' in Opera Flanders in the Wagner Year 2013, director Tatjana Gürbaca in London attended the Opera Award for Best Wagner Anniversary Production. The production was also awarded by Opernwelt as the best production of the 2012-2012 season, and Tatjana himself was voted best director of that season.
